Terminal access: DDA plans quicker link from IGI to CP

NEW DELHI: For quick access to IGI Airport, Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is exploring the possibility of developing a route connecting the two terminals—T1 and T3—with Connaught Place in central Delhi and the neighbouring areas. The land-owning agency has already invited expression of interest (EOI) from consultants for a feasibility study.

The project, proposed in a high-level meeting of urban development (UD) ministry officials, also plans to decongest the stretch from 11 Murti on Mother Teresa Road to CP, which sees heavy traffic during peak hours, through a new route. “The IGI route is the priority as air travel has become common and vehicular load on the existing route has gone up. But the other stretch is also congested and another route is required for easy traffic flow in the surrounding areas,” said a DDA official.

The new route to IGI, officials said, can pass through any area in Delhi and can be either a tunnel or an elevated corridor. Consultants will have to study factors such as availability of land, vehicular flow and maximum areas that can be covered while suggesting the route. DDA has asked them to submit EOI by December 28. DDA will then select one of them to prepare a detailed project report (DPR).

“The new link to airport should not run parallel to the existing routes. There could be multiple entry points so that people can get on to it without any hassle,” said an official.

While DDA has given Connaught Place as the reference point in its advertisement, officials said, the new route can even be a little away from CP. “The idea is to connect maximum areas with the airport. CP is just a reference point as it is centrally located. It is not necessary that the route has to start from CP. We don’t want to choke CP,” said an official.

Most of the roads in the proposed project are under the public works department (PWD) and New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) while a few are under National Highways Authority of India. But the UD ministry has asked DDA to prepare the DPR to speed it up. “The decision regarding the executing agency will be taken later,” said a member of UTTIPEC, the apex urban planning body in the city.
