DJB generates energy from waste

Sewage treatment has always been a challenge for DJB. With the current waste water generation of Delhi standing at 1000 MGD for this year, DJB budgets are dwindling to treat this huge amount. Vaish committee has recommended leveraging the Bio-gas generated at various plants to generate electricity. Same electricity can be used to operate treatment plants. The DJB generated 1440 lac cft from the Okhla Sewage Treatment Plant and same was supplied to the nearby colonies.

This generated revenue of 32 lacs for the govt. agency. Delhi Master Plan experts, CertesRealty.com points out that considering the resource crunch of DJB the new mantra of DJB should be “waste to energy”. This practice has been already well adapted in western countries where waste generation is higher than India.
