ABOUT DELHI

GEOGRAPHY

 

 

A centre for arts & cul­ture for long, Delhi is loc­ated at 28°61N, 77°23E .It adjoins the states of Uttar Pra­desh in the east, and Hary­ana from three sides of West, South & North. The NCT of Delhi is spread over an area of 1,483 km². Approx. 783 km² of it was des­ig­nated as the rural and 700 km² as urban. Most of the above stat­ist­ics is bound to change with the advent of the new mas­ter plan MPD 2021. It is spread over about 52* km in length & 49* km in width.

 CLIMATE

 The cli­mate of Delhi is SEMI-ARID. The cli­matic con­di­tions through the year have high vari­ations, espe­cially between sum­mer and winter. Sum­mers are between April to Octo­ber, with the mon­soon sea­son start­ing the last week of June. The cli­mate starts to turn cold from the middle of Octo­ber and the winter lasts till Feb­ru­ary. It peaks from the lat­ter half of Decem­ber and remain till Janu­ary end.

 DEMOGRAPHICS

 The pop­u­la­tion of Delhi, as per the census 2001 was 13,782,976.

  • The pop­u­la­tion dens­ity as per the last census was enu­mer­ated as 9,294 per­sons per km²
  • The Sex ratio of Delhi is estim­ated to be 821 women per 1000 men.
  • The lit­er­acy rate as per 2001 sur­vey is estim­ated to be 81.8%.
  • The pop­u­la­tion is estim­ated to have increased to 15.3 mil­lion by 2004.
  • Some estim­ates pro­ject the cur­rent pop­u­la­tion of the city to be around 17 mil­lion, mak­ing it one of the most pop­u­lous cit­ies in the world.
  • Together with the sur­round­ing cit­ies (which are include in the National cap­ital ter­rit­ory of Delhi), Delhi is one of the fast­est grow­ing cit­ies in the world.
  • By 2015, Delhi & Mum­bai are expec­ted to be amongst the top most largest and densely pop­u­lated cit­ies in the world.

Spe­cial emphasis is afforded in Delhi for the growth of edu­ca­tion and the devel­op­ment of human resource capital.

 As per the records of 2004 – 2005, fol­low­ing were some of the resources, in Delhi.

  • Another pos­it­ive aspect would be that female stu­dents rep­res­en­ted 49% of the total enrol­ment.
  • The Delhi gov­ern­ment spends approx­im­ately 1.5 — 2.0% of the gross state domestic product on education.
  • The ini­ti­at­ives of the gov­ern­ment, as well as the private sec­tor are likely to bring in expo­nen­tial growth in the increase of the edu­ca­tional insti­tu­tions in the NCT of Delhi.
  • The stu­dents and gradu­ates from these edu­ca­tional insti­tu­tions are pro­jec­ted to be the corner­stone for the devel­op­ment of busi­ness cli­mate in the region, and would con­trib­ute towards eco­nomic activ­ity, real estate devel­op­ment & prosperity.

 

 

ECONOMY

 

  • Delhi is the second largest com­mer­cial busi­ness centre in south Asia after Mum­bai, with an estim­ated net State Domestic Product (SDP) of INR 830.85 bil­lion. (FY 2005 estimates)
  • As per FY’05 stat­ist­ics, Delhi’s per cap­ita income of approx. INR 54000 is approx. 2.5 times of the national average.
  • All three sec­tors of primary, sec­ond­ary & ter­tiary con­trib­ute to the eco­nomy of Delhi, which has a very con­du­cive busi­ness cli­mate. To the total SDP, ter­tiary sec­tor con­trib­utes 70.95% , fol­lowed by sec­ond­ary and primary sec­tors with 25.2% and 3.85% con­tri­bu­tion respectively.
  • Delhi’s work­force con­sti­tutes 32.82% of the pop­u­la­tion show­ing an increase of 52.52% between 1991 and 2001.
  • Delhi’s unem­ploy­ment rate decreased from 12.57% in 1999 – 2000 to 4.63% in 2003.
  • Delhi is poised to take a giant leap towards the cre­ation of bet­ter infra­struc­ture favour­ing the ser­vice sec­tor and the MPD 2021 is a pos­it­ive step in that direction.
